Today I made a new friend. He probably didnt start off this colour as he has been boiled.

@asda – You guys make it really hard to privately message or email, so I guess I have to do this publicly? I am a little pleased because it means I get to show off the photos!
Today we found 2 Plutella Xylostella* larvae (Cabbage Worms) in our broccoli. We found at least one the other day as well, in a different pack. Not sure how many we’ve eaten!

I think this highlights a few major issues with the way you guys do business. Firstly you’re importing species from countries around the world, and the proper checks haven’t been completed. This can be devastating to local ecology (see Red Invasive Fire Ants or Signal Crayfish).

Everything is wrapped in plastic – other super markets are doing this less and less, but we’ve noticed Asda still have a really poor track record for this. You are plastic wrapping food and keeping all the caterpillars in!

I have read Cabbage moth (Diamondback moth) are more and more becoming resistant to chemical pesticides. I guess your growers in Spain are spraying still, but the worms aren’t responding. But they are taking the chemical in, but just not dying of it. Pesticides like Benevia 100 break down slowly and so there is probably still a substantial amount of this in the gut of our new friends. Can you tell me how safe this is to eat and at what point it becomes toxic or even cancerous?
